Pre-Operative Instructions

CMMP Surgery Center cares about you. It is very important to follow pre-op instructions to make sure your surgery has the best possible outcome. Follow these general rules, instructing you how to prepare for surgery. You may by given additional pre-op instructions specific to your procedure prior to surgery.

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY (this includes water and chewing gum).  Your surgery will be postponed if you ignore this precaution.  If you take blood pressure or heart medication, please take with a small sip of water.  If you are on insulin, please bring it with you.

DO NOT consume alcohol 24 hours prior to your surgery.  Refrain from smoking 12 hours prior to your surgery.  These substances can cause you to have adverse reactions to anesthesia and medication.

DO NOT use any body lotion or powder the morning of your procedure.

DO take a bath or shower on the morning of surgery to minimize the risk of infection.

DO bring a list of your current medications including dosage.

DO brush your teeth on the morning of surgery, but DO NOT swallow any water.

DO wear loose comfortable clothing and low-heeled shoes.

DO bring your health insurance card and a government issued photo ID, but leave all jewelry and other valuables at home.

DO remove all make-up and false fingernails before arrival for surgery.

DO report any health changes to your surgeon, immediately even if the changes seem minor, such as fever, cough, rash, or a cold.  Notify your physician if there is a possibility that you are pregnant.

DO arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours following surgery.  The effects of anesthesia and sedation will make you drowsy for this period of time.  If you do not have a responsible adult to drive you home, you risk your procedure being cancelled. You may use public transportation, only if you have a responsible adult with you upon discharge. You cannot drive yourself, be left alone, or leave the Surgery Center in a taxi.
